How it all began

As told by our founder, Myra Sable

It was the spring of 1970. I was pregnant with my third child and had just moved into a young, buzzing community where I met a neighbor who enjoyed cooking as much as I did. Without knowing it, Sable & Rosenfeld was percolating. I began writing restaurant reviews for our local paper and during one of my interviews met my future partner, Carol Rosenfeld. Our first branded product was Russian mustard and was an instant success because Esquire Magazine featured it in their Christmas centerfold as the gift to give to men that year. Subsequently, Neiman Marcus came knocking and our first real production unfolded.

Timeline

1970

Opened the ‘Good Taste Shop’ at Creeds department store on Bloor Street in Toronto's fashionable Yorkville neighbourhood.

1971

1972

Sable & Rosenfeld becomes the first Canadian company to be sold into Bloomingdale’s famous food cellar.

1973

The Sable & Rosenfeld portfolio expands to 50 gourmet products and stores are opened across Canada in Holt Renfrew stores.

1974

Invited by the late Garfield Weston to open a Sable & Rosenfeld department in London's Fortnum & Mason department store.

1975

Sable & Rosenfeld is picked up by Fauchon in Paris

1977

The focus shifts from the boutique retail space into making Sable & Rosenfeld a full-time manufacturer of specialty condiments.

1986

Bantam Books publishes Myra Sable's first cookbook, 'Elegant Entertaining'.

1987

Sable & Rosenfeld wins all of the top awards at the National Specialty Food Show for product line and packaging.

1988

Sable & Rosenfeld celebrates breaking the 3,000-mark of specialty retailers carrying our products all across North America.

1995

Myra Sable publishes her second cookbook, 'Favorite Recipes', published by Little Brown Canada and Firefly in the U.S.

Conquering food shows in New York and San Francisco were next on our agenda. In order to achieve this we rented commercial kitchens; we worked from home and we hired everyone on our block in addition to our friends to cook, chop and bake.

About

Newspaper advertisement, 1970

The creation of Sable & Rosenfeld’s Tipsy Olives, Tipsy Onions and Tipsy Cherries, three of the most innovative cocktail garnishes of the 1980’s, quickly took over the party scene, as martinis, manhattans and gimlets were back in fashion thereby strengthening the Sable & Rosenfeld brand. Our mission today, and since our beginning, is to provide high quality, zestfully delicious and easy to use condiments for everyday living.

Meet Our Team

Myra Sable
Founder and President

Myra Sable founded Sable & Rosenfeld out of her kitchen in 1970 while working as a part-time restaurant reviewer in Toronto. Starting with a home recipe for Russian Mustard, she meticulously grew the product line into what it is today, specializing in gourmet appetizers and condiments, sauces and cocktail garnishes. She is a recipient of the WBE Canada Doing Business Award.

Kathy Smith
HEAD OF OPERATIONS

Kathy Smith joined the Sable & Rosenfeld family in 1996. Her days start much earlier than most in the office, shuffling her two sons to the rink for hockey practice with her husband Fraser. Summer weekends are often spent at the cottage–Russian mustard (a sandwich is never consumed without it!) and a bottle of Pinot Grigio, coupled with mini quiches in S&R Party Cups all a lakeside-must.

Doug Cussons
VICE PRESIDENT, SALES (CANADA)

An eight-year veteran of the Royal Canadian Air Force, Doug joined Sable & Rosenfeld in 2001, bringing forty-seven years of food retail experience with him. As the sales lead for our Canadian operation, his cocktail preference leans towards the hearty to offset the cold winters: virgin caesars packed with an abundance of Tipsy Olives and Onions. When he isn't hosting one of his three children or four grandchildren, the summer months are often spent on the golf course or at Rogers Centre watching the Blue Jays.

John Wheeler
OFFICE MANAGER

John Wheeler has been at Sable & Rosenfeld for fourteen years; almost as long as the twenty-seven years he has been with his partner Francois and their nine year old standard poodle Katrina (yes, after the hurricane)! When he isn't at the office or up at the cottage in Halliburton, he is often hosting friends along with some wine and charcuterie and a hefty supply of often-requested 3-Pepper Blast and Tipsy Olives on-hand. His last-minute hosting trick? BBQ shrimp brushed with Tipsy Teriyaki Sauce served alongside roasted vegetables & lightly-coated Tipsy Jerk potatoes.
